The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles began their post-Valdez era with a straight-set romp over the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.

Michelle Morente and rookie Kat Tolentino were also impressive as they delivered nine points and eight markers, respectively.

"We're very happy with the win, we've been waiting for this for a long time", said Morado.

"We lost a go-to player and this is the way we can deal with it the best (to have a balanced scoring) For sure, were going to try to get everyone to score", said skipper and setter Jia Morado, who registered 45 of the team's 47 excellent sets. "We're hoping na we can continue this for the following games".

UST, which is considerd as one of the title contenders heading into the season, had a bad outing on their reception, giving away 11 points to the Lady Eagles from the service line.

EJ Laure, on the other hand, finished with 17 points for the Tigresses, who fought tooth and nail but were simply overpowered by the dominant and more experienced Ateneo side.
