Southbound I-75 will close from Springwells street in Detroit to Northline Road in Southgate starting Saturday.
The construction project looks to make improvements to the Rouge River Bridge, fix patches of rough concrete, and increase safety on the highway through technological advancements. Northbound I-75 will remain open through construction, but some lane closures will kick-in in 2018.
The colossal closure is so crews can work on the roughly 50-year-old Rouge River Bridge, which needs a new bridge deck according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. The posted detour for commercial vehicles will include southbound I-75 to westbound I-96, then southbound I-275 to southbound I-75 in Monroe.
Crews will replace all concrete on the Rouge River bridge deck and the I-75 bridge at Fort Street, replace the Goddard Street bridge over I-75 with two smaller bridges and fix 13 other bridges along I-75 in downriver communities.
