Overall, J.C. Penney will shutter 138 stores across the country - nearly a quarter of the total in just in four states.

Between Macy's, Sears and Kmart all closing down stores, almost 300 department stores will close down nationwide, CNBC reported. The company had about 105,000 full and part-time employees past year.

Penney will close 4 stores in Iowa - in Decorah, Fort Dodge, Oskaloosa, and Ottumwa.

"We believe closing stores will allow us to adjust our business to effectively compete against the growing threat of online retailers", J.C. Penney CEO Marvin Ellison said in a statement in February, according to CNBC.

Liquidation of the stores being closed is scheduled to start April 17.

J CPenney says it will offer "separation benefits", including assistance getting other jobs, to the employees affected by the closings. That company has filed for bankruptcy and is closing a total of 552 stores.

J.C. Penney continues to operate four Jacksonville area department stores in Regency Square Mall, The Avenues mall, Orange Park Mall and the Ponce de Leon Mall in St. Augustine.

J.C. Penney said the closures are part of its “continuing effort to advance sustainable growth and long-term profitability.”.

The J.C. Penney location at Rio Grande Plaza in Rio Grande New Jersey, off of the Garden State Parkway near Wildwood, also wasn't spared.
