Former Leinster head coach and Australia rugby global Matt O'Connor will once again take charge at English Premiership side Leicester Tigers.

O'Connor, capped once by Australia, guided Leicester to the title in 2013 as head coach under director of rugby Richard Cockerill, having previously worked as both a backline and attack coach for the Tigers.

The 46-year-old will now be returning to the Premiership, as the incumbent Leicester coach Aaron Mauger prepares to leave after this Saturday's match against Northampton Saints, Cockerill having been sacked in January.

Explaining the decision to turn to O'Connor, Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE told the club's official website: "We are delighted that Matt O'Connor has accepted an offer to return to Welford Road".

Former All Black Aaron Mauger will coach English Premiership club Leicester for one more game before an unceremonious exit.

"This brought up the names of a number of potentially very good coaches".

After leaving Leicester, O'Connor became head coach with Irish heavyweights Leinster, a spell that included league title success and a European Champions Cup semi-final appearance.

The former All Black centre played for Leicester after leaving New Zealand in 2007.

Leicester beat Exeter Chiefs 16-12 in the Anglo-Welsh Cup final last weekend to claim their first silverware in four years, but they've struggled domestically this season and failed to progress from the pool stages of the European Champions Cup.

"Matt's strengths are in his work with players on the training pitch and we are making changes to our organisational structure to enable him to focus exclusively on the success of the team".

'We thank Aaron for his commitment to the club over the last two seasons as head coach, and especially in his time in interim charge of team affairs in recent months.

"We wish him well for the future".
