Several killed as tree falls at Ghana tourist site

Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police including other disaster management officials rushed to the disaster scene to rescue lives.

People deal with the aftermath of the tragedy at Ghana's Kintampo Waterfall. "They were swimming in the river when a storm with violent gusts of wind uprooted trees that fell on them", he said.

Kintampo Falls is a tourist site popular among domestic and worldwide tourists who throng to the area in the thousands every week.

Eyewitnesses told local police that the incident happened around 4 p.m. (12 p.m. ET) during a severe rainstorm which caused three large trees to fall to the ground.

The tree crushed students who were swimming in a pool at the base of the waterfall, local police chief Owusu Boampong told the BBC.

Catherine Afeku has visited victims of Sunday waterfalls disaster who were taken to the Kintampo Government Hospital for treatment.

233livenews.com reported that some students of the University of Energy and Natural Resources were also involved in the accident.

Boateng added that they had to use chainsaws and other cutting tools hack through the branches to free the victims.

In a separate post on Twitter, John Mahama described the incident as "tragic", and called for emotional support for all the affected families.
