"The Virgin Australia livery flying to Hong Kong for the first time is an exciting development and with it brings the style and sophistication that is synonymous with our brand".

"Virgin Australia's entry into Hong Kong and Greater China is a key pillar of our worldwide strategy, allowing us to tap into Australia's fastest growing and most valuable inbound travel market,"Virgin Australia chief executive John Borghetti said in a statement".

Qantas and Cathay Pacific are gearing up for a pitched battle for the skies between Melbourne and Hong Kong as Virgin Australia moves onto the popular route. "Coupled with service delivered by the world's best cabin crew4, we know guests travelling on this route from July will appreciate the effortless luxury that comes with Virgin Australia", Mr Borghetti said.

Flight VA87 will depart Melbourne at 10.25am every Monday and arrive in Hong Kong at 6.05pm and depart at 9.40am on Wednesdays, arriving at 5.20pm.

Ticket sales will begin on Wednesday, Virgin said.

Except all three airlines to take an axe to airfares from economy through to business class in the early days of this stoush.

The granting of interim approval will allow Virgin to press the button on its planned expansion into Hong Kong and China, with connections and codeshare flights through HNA, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express along with reciprocal agreements for frequent flyer programs and lounge access.

The ACCC said it had chose to grant interim authorisation given the tie-up "appears likely to result in some public benefit and limited public detriment".

There were also other areas of cooperation to achieve "cost synergies through aircraft scale and utilisation benefits as well as benefits from using catering, ground handling, cargo and other operational benefits".

Virgin Australia has said it plans in the longer term to sell flights between Australia and mainland China.

The alliance means passengers will be able to connect from Hong Kong to 13 destinations in mainland China. However, no start date has been announced.

Virgin Australia today announced it will commence services between Melbourne and Hong Kong, expanding its global footprint into Greater China for the first time.

The airline flagged its first venture into the Chinese market in mid-2016 and confirmed in February it would launch a Hong Kong service but until now has not said if it would fly from Sydney or Melbourne. Currently, Hong Kong Airlines serves Cairns and the Gold Coast.
