Italian rider Davide Cimolai claimed a narrow victory in a sprint finish on the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya in Spain.

The FDJ rider edged out Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni, of Team Cofidis, at the end of Monday's 179km stage in Calella.

The finish was so tight Cimolai did not celebrate victory until minutes after crossing the finish line in Calella, with Dimension Data's Kristian Sbaragli coming in third.

"I didn't know how I would be - two days ago I did Milan-San Remo, a very long race", he was reported as saying by Cycling News.

It was his second career win at the Tour of Catalonia after also winning a stage previous year.

This was the first of seven stages of what promises to be a hotly disputed race featuring most of cycling's big guns such as Britain's three-time Tour of France victor Chris Froome, defending champion Nairo Quintana of Colombia and Spanish veteran Alberto Contador, victor of all three Grand Tours, as well as locally-based Irish rider Dan Martin.

The second stage is a 41 kilometer (25-mile) team time trial and Sky will be hoping for a better show than at Tirreno-Adriatico where three members of the squad suffered mechanical issues with their wheels.

This year's race is the 97th edition.
