SEATTLE (AP) — George Springer has been simply powerful in the first inning this year.

Springer hit the game's first pitch over the wall in left-center to put the Astros up 1-0.

"Just looking for something to hit hard. Once we started scoring some runs, especially, they got really excited and I fed on that", Paxton said. He exhausted in the sixth inning, and he left the game with a 3-2 lead. In 2014, Paxton allowed three runs in five innings in a 5-3 win over the Angels.

Gattis hit a line drive off the outstretched glove of Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger, who nearly made a spectacular play. "Last time I tried to stuff it down and not react to all the energy in the building", Paxton said. He's going to be just fine. "Some nights it happens".

Joe Musgrove (1-0) pitched into the sixth inning, giving up three runs and seven hits for Houston, even though he said he struggled with his command.

"They were gonna force me to throw it for strikes", Paxton said of his curve.

Freeman scored on a wild pitch and Motter came home on when Robinson Cano grounded into a fielder's choice. But Seattle's next batter, Nelson Cruz, flied out to center to end it.

Astros second baseman Jose Altuve told the Chronicle, "For me, Springer is not only one of the best players on this team, he's one of the best players in the league. He's a unsafe leadoff hitter", Hinch said, according to the Chronicle. "We haven't gotten on track yet, but this was a much better showing by our lineup". Miranda didn't have great command but the only big mistakes he made was serving up a pair of solo home runs to George Springer and Marwin Gonzalez, respectively.

It's far too early to anoint a new ace in Seattle after more than a decade of King Felix Hernandez taking the ball on Opening Days, but Hernandez wasn't his normal dominant self (solid, but not dominant) last season.

Mariners: Seattle placed Segura on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

"It's very mild. Fingers crossed he'll be OK tomorrow or the next day", Servais said. The Mariners selected Freeman from Triple-A Tacoma to take Segura's spot and designated for assignment left-hander Paul Fry to clear room on the 40-man roster.

Motter, starting at shortstop in place of the injured Jean Segura, had three doubles in the game. They were also his first hits of the season after he started 0 for 7.

Mike Fiers gets the ball, and he is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA and three strikeouts this season. Fiers gave up two runs in six innings in his first start against Kansas City.

Mariners: LHP Ariel Miranda (0-0) makes his second start of the season.
