- Russell Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson's 56-year-old record with his 42nd triple-double of the season Sunday, then he broke the Denver Nuggets' hearts with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for a 106-105 victory.

Westbrook was asked if there was a point during the season when he realized Robertson's triple-double record was within reach.

The debate on who should win the 2017 NBA MVP award has picked up in the final weeks of the regular season even as both players impressed with their triple-double feats and other impressive stats.

"His performance down the stretch was incredible", Thunder coach Billy Donovan said, adding that Westbrook strengthened the argument that he should be the NBA Most Valuable Player honors.

Rockets 135, Kings 128: James Harden had 35 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds for his 21st triple-double of the season, leading Houston past Sacramento.

Known for his relentless style and frenetic energy, Westbrook was one of six players to start every game this season. Small forwards Doug McDermott and Andre Roberson will also not play because of sore knees. The Thunder finish the regular season at home on Wednesday night against Denver, and Donovan said they will have more conversation with Westbrook before deciding if he will play in that game or not.

Westbrook, who finished with 16 rebounds and 10 assists, cut the deficit to five points after hitting three straight free throws assessed after flagrant and technical fouls by Nikola Jokic. The Hall of Famer said Westbrook's triple-double numbers show his overall impact on the game beyond his team's record.

Thunder's Russell Westbrook celebrates after scoring a three-pointer at the buzzer against Denver.

Russell Westbrook first made triple-double history. "I think myself and our medical staff really agreed with him that this would be a good opportunity to get some rest". Not only did they get the sixth playoff seed, where they are going to play James Harden and the Houston Rockets, but Russell Westbrook made National Basketball Association history. Three teammates had failed to connect after passes from Westbrook when he found Simaj Christon in the corner and handed off to him for a three-pointer. He sat in two of the Thunder's final four games last season: at Portland and then again at San Antonio to close the year. OKC locked up the sixth seed in the conference and will meet Houston in the first round of the playoffs. James Harden has become one of the league's elite passers after being moved to point guard from shooting guard this season by Rockets head coach Mike D'Antoni.
