Baidu has been investing in R&D for autonomous driving technology since 2015.

Chinese internet giant Baidu has said it will share much of the technology it has created for its self-driving cars.

"An open, innovative industry ecosystem will accelerate the development of autonomous driving in the United States and other developed automotive markets, and through open technology our technological achievements can be quickly applied to a wide range of fields and accelerate even more achievements", Lu added. Qi Lu, COO at Baidu, said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that opening up access to its autonomous driving platform will also foster innovation in the USA and other developed markets. "It has many vehicle brands and an open environment that is ripe for collaboration".

Baidu said it hopes to see vehicles start using its technology on urban roads toward the end of the year and then on highways and open city roads by 2020. The company has been testing out vehicles in both China and the U.S. Additionally, Baidu has been getting DuerOS - which draws its name and essence from Baidu's own Duer virtual assistant - into third-party devices like Chinese consumer electronics company Ainemo's Little Fish family robot. It has since tested its vehicles on the roads of Beijing and Wuzhen, as well as California after being awarded a permit by the California Department of Motor Vehicles in January.
