Alberto Randazzo met women online through hookup and dating sites such as Ashley Madison and Match.com and convinced them to sexually abuse their babies and young children so he could watch, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Brooklyn said in a release.

A judge sentenced Alberto Randazzo Wednesday after he pleaded guilty in July to receiving child pornography and conspiring with at least five women - sometimes the children's own mothers - to sexually exploit the young victims.

Though Brooklyn Federal Judge Pamela Chen called Randazzo's crimes "heinous and depraved", she said 80 years was too severe.

Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill said "Randazzo's exploitation of innocent children is unconscionable". The sick spree started as early as 2010 and ran through early 2013, prosecutors said, when Randazzo was a supervisor in the Midtown North Precinct.

His then-girlfriend said she was already concerned he might be a pedophile because he spent more time talking to a seven-year-old girl at a holiday party than adults.

She previously told the court that she hacked into his iPhone when he was sleeping, correctly guessing that his police badge number was his password.

She also came across sickening texts telling another woman he wanted to have sex with her on a child's bed. He was eventually caught when his girlfriend found his disturbing text messages and reported him to the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau. The government said the victims ranged in age from a few months to 8 years old.

'I will not and can not justify anything that happened here, ' he said.

The ex-cop said he felt "this progression" that he couldn't stop. It was 'a darkness I couldn't wish on anyone'.

His mother sobbed during the proceeding and told Randazzo she loved him as he was taken out of the courtroom.

Two women have pleaded guilty to charges in the case, and a third awaits trial. One woman has been sentenced to five years in prison while another has yet to be sentenced.

And as sentence was passed at Brooklyn Federal Court, she said she wished God would strike her 'from the face of the Earth'.
