They have spent a fortune on players but it has has not panned out the way their Spanish coach would have wanted. A recent draw with Arsenal and defeat by Liverpool have not made their fans very happy. 'If you want to become a stronger club and stronger team, you can not drop points at home.

City swept forward as the game approached the half-hour mark and David Silva found De Bruyne, whose strike from the edge of the box cannoned back off a defender.

Failing to challenge for the league title or the Champions League might be grudgingly accepted in Guardiola's first campaign, but dropping out of the top four would be much harder to swallow.

De Bruyne led the charge as City broke quickly, expertly picking out Sane for the young German to drill low under Forster.

Antonio Conte, in contrast, has made just 33, and Mauricio Pochettino 61.

He is now experimenting with Jesus Navas at right back, and Claudio Bravo has reassumed the goalkeeping mantle for the last two league games. "Next up is the FA Cup - I love the Cup and love a derby!"

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany could return to the starting line-up, having not been risked against Hull. "Today we saw again how good they are so they are not going to drop points".

He added: "I enjoyed it a lot in Barcelona, I enjoyed in Munich and I am enjoying it here".

Guardiola might have thought winning the Premier League during his first season in English football would be relatively straightforward after starting with seven successive wins. "We simply did not play well enough against this team, nervous with the ball", the Frenchman told BBC's Match of the Day. "And that in Italy, in Spain, doesn't happen, that's why I'm so, so glad for the fans we have, because for the first time in my life I have experienced that". Where I am at physically does not matter.

"For me it's always a long journey back after injury", Kompany said.

"Every manager Vincent Kompany has played under knows what an important player he is".

After the opening salvo from the Mancunians the game calmed with both sides enjoying brief spells of possession.
