The Brazilian nodded in his 12th goal of the season at the end of the first half to lift the Reds two points above Manchester City into third place in the standings.

It was generally a poor first half of football at the Hawthorns with the best early chance falling to Hal Robson-Kanu.

Roberto Firmino's header on the brink of half-time proved to be the only difference between the two sides as Liverpool gave their chances of finishing in the top four another welcome boost.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet believes the club have shown great resilience in recent weeks. Liverpool are now 9 points above fifth-placed Manchester United who are playing Chelsea this afternoon.

"The main thing is we kept a clean sheet, so one goal was enough to get the victory".

Liverpool are winning ugly. Everybody did their job for the team to grind out a result.

"That's what we want to do in every game we play". On top of that, Tony Pulis has an outstanding record against Liverpool, having never lost a home game against them, which comes from his spells with Stoke, Crystal Palace, and now West Brom. Got the victor at Stoke last weekend and repeated the trick here.

Milner should have scored moments later when he arrived late to meet a cross by Firmino, only to side-foot a volley over the crossbar.

Substitutes: Morrison 6, Rondon 6, McClean 6.

With Ragnar Klavan out with illness, in came Lucas Leiva - sitting in front of Lovren and Matip.

Even though the Spaniard is still some way out, from a central position you would still expect him to hit the target, not to mention the potential option of passing to Daniel Sturridge who was free on the left. Yacob gifts the ball to Coutinho and Liverpool pour forward.

Firmino had the game's first decent chance on 15 minutes after he was played through by Coutinho but he managed to drag his effort wide.

The winger connected well with his shot but it was smothered low down by Mignolet.

Firmino crossed for Coutinho, who sent a hard shot wide at the far-post.

In the 80th minute, darting into the area, Phillips had only Mignolet to beat but the Belgium goalkeeper did well to spread himself, sticking out a leg for the block.
