It was the fifth time the council has adopted a press statement on North Korea.

"Those who would challenge our resolve or readiness should know, we will defeat any attack and beat any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response", Pence told 2,500 sailors aboard the USS Ronald Reagan at the US Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo Bay.

The 15-member council said in the statement that the April 15 missile launch, even if it ended in failure, is a clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

The UN Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned North Korea's latest missile test and threatened to impose new sanctions against Pyongyang for its "highly destabilizing behavior".

It expresses the Security Council's commitment "to a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the situation" and welcomes efforts by council members and other countries "to facilitate a peaceful and comprehensive solution through dialogue".

Russian Federation wanted to include language contained in previous statements and resolutions stressing the need to achieve a peaceful solution "through dialogue".

US Ambassador Nikki Haley separately stressed that the onus was on North Korea to prevent an escalation.

20 de abril de 2017, 16:47Pyongyang, Apr 20 (Prensa Latina) The Democratic People " s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has warned Washington that it is ready to repel any "super-mighty preemptive strike" by the United States, according to Rodong Sinmun newspaper.

"We have said it as clearly as we can possibly say it".

The Bush administration had removed North Korea from the list of state sponsors of terrorism in 2008 after North Korea agreed to continue disabling a plutonium plant and permit access for inspections to verify that it froze its nuclear program.

"North Korea is the most risky and urgent threat to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific", Pence said on the deck of an American aircraft carried docked in Japan.

Tensions have escalated over North Korean moves to accelerate its arms programs, including developing an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the United States and announcing that a declared priority is to develop a hydrogen bomb.

"We believe that it is absolutely essential... that everybody is involved in order to make sure that everything is done so that the threat represented by the development in relation to missiles and in relation to nuclear capability - not become a threat to the worldwide community", said Guterres.
