A 15-year-old Tennessee girl was rescued near a cabin in a remote part of northern California on Thursday, more than a month after her 50-year-old teacher kidnapped her and set off a nationwide manhunt, authorities said.

In the days before he allegedly abducted his 15-year-old student, Tennessee teacher Tad Cummins refilled a prescription for Cialis, took out a loan for quick cash and made hotel reservations in another state, actions investigators believe show he was planning to leave with the girl.

The cabin's caretaker alerted law enforcement to their presence and helped them hatch a plan to draw Cummins from the residence unarmed and without Thomas, the cabin's owner told CNN. Cummins came out of the cabin willingly and was arrested. "That kind of clues people in", Barry said.

The statement also expressed thanks to the media and specifically the Maury County Sheriff's Office, and investigators Bucky Rowland and Nathan Johns.

The main concern is for her emotional well-being, TBI Director Mark Gwyn said.

Siskiyou County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Gilley confirmed that his team worked with a neighbor to draw Cummins out of the cabin. Thomas family attorney Jason Whatley said a special police unit "swooped in" on the cabin with "force". The caretaker reports that Thomas would not get out of the auto and would only communicate by whispering in Cummins' ear.

Cummins was arrested and taken into federal custody to face a charge of transportation of a minor across state lines for sexual intercourse.

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney Jack Smith said a federal charge has been filed against Cummins.

Childhood friend Caleb Banks described the moment he and 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas' family found out she was found safe.

The pair went to the commune but returned to the gas station this week, with Cummins explaining they didn't get along with people at the commune, Barry said.

Tennessee teacher Tad Cummins said he and his alleged teen kidnapping victim were a couple looking for help after losing everything in a house fire, according to the tipster who alerted authorities.

March 5 - Cummins researches "teen marriage" on the computer and what features on a Nissan Rogue can be tracked by police. A day after they disappeared, Cummins was sacked from his teaching job at Culleoka Unit School, where Elizabeth had been a student in his forensics class. Authorities credited citizens and the media for their involvement in helping to locate the teen.

Cummins and Thomas had been in the cabin for about a week. There are "particular qualities in the Northwest that make it easy to disappear", Whatley said.

Cummins added to the TBI's Top 10 Most Wanted list.

"These two had a relationship to the extent where she didn't exhibit any anger toward him".

February 3 - Surveillance video shows Thomas in Cummins' classroom for more than 30 minutes, despite orders to stay away from Thomas during the investigation. He was taken aback at how small and childlike she was, a side of her that the public didn't see while she was under Cummins' control.
