Cauley and Finau are tied on eight-under as the former, who is chasing a first PGA Tour win, fired a six-under-par 66 while Finau went one better with a 65.

Cauley and Finau, the victor a year ago at the Puerto Rico Open, were one shot ahead of Cameron Smith, Kevin Chappell, Robby Shelton and 1994 Texas Open victor Bob Estes.

Poulter also failed to make it through to the weekend in the final tournament of his medical exemption, leaving him short of the required earnings to retain his full PGA Tour status. Finau shot a seven-under 65.

Finau holed a wedge from 105 yards for eagle on No. 11. John Huh, Kevin Tway and Jonathan Randolph are tied for seventh at 6 under.

After his approach landed in shallow water in the creek fronting the 18th green, Finau played it out and chipped it past the green, rather than take the penalty drop. "I got off to a nice start and made some putts, and I think you gotta do everything well on this golf course to play good".

Cauley picked up a shot at the 13th and added a fifth gain from eight feet at the 15th, before closing his blemish-free card with a close-range birdie at the par-five last. "I just didn't quite convert on some of the putts and today I putted really well, which kept me going through most of the round".

"Yesterday I got behind the eight ball pretty fast", said Finau of his opening 71. He avoided bogey all day, including sinking a 12-footer for par at No. 17 after a poor birdie attempt.

After two rounds at the Valero Texas Open, two players are tied for the lead at 8-under.
