Earlier, at the country's central commemoration event at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem, dignitaries laid wreaths next to a monument commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943.

This year, education ministers from 12 countries are scheduled to meet in Israel to discuss how to carry on with remembrance of the Holocaust, or Shoah in Hebrew, once all the survivors have died.

Fifty of the 935 lawmakers who have served in the Knesset since Israel's founding were Holocaust survivors, the Knesset said. Cafes and places of entertainment shut down while TV and radio stations broadcast documentaries about the Holocaust and its victims.
