"However, it should be recognised that the 457 Visa programme has worked as intended".

Candidates for citizenship will under the new rules be required to be permanent residents for four years against one year today.

Inspired by Trump, Prime Minister Turnbull has also pitched for "Australians First" and said Australian jobs should be for Australians.

Australia's Prime Minister, Malcom Turnbull, [official website] announced [video] Tuesday that the country will be introducing stricter visa requirements for skilled foreign workers.

Australia plans to raise the bar for handing out citizenships by lengthening the waiting period, adding a new "Australian values" test and raising the standard for English language as part of a shake up of its immigration programme.

The citizenship test will have "new and more meaningful questions" about an applicant's understanding of and commitment to Australia's shared values and responsibilities.

He said he would in due course replace the programme with a more stringent system, making it hard for companies to hire non-Australian citizens.

Having already been a permanent resident for at least four years; When asked about reports that applicants would be quizzed on whether they supported forced child marriage or female genital mutilation, Mr Turnbull said it was important to "reinforce our values".

The Federal Government has announced there will be sweeping changes to the testing for Australian citizenship.

Aspiring citizens will have to undergo tougher tests on their English language skills and ability to demonstrate "Australian values", Turnbull said.

Applicants who cheat during the citizenship test will automatically fail.

'I'm skeptical that Mr Turnbull's crackdown is actually a con job and it will make no real difference, ' he told reporters on the NSW Central Coast. During the visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr Turnbull undertook a ride aboard the Delhi Metro and visited the famous Akshardham Temple in the national capital.

"Our country shouldn't be embarrassed to say we want great people to call Australia home", Dutton will say.

"We are making no apologies that we want people to be able to integrate... we want people to be able to work... and contribute and not live life on welfare".

Indian IT professionals account for almost 18,000 visas issued under the 457 visa category, according to a research report by the Australian Population Research Institute.
