NEW YORK (AP) — The Queen of Soul is coming out swinging against fellow legend Dionne Warwick, accusing her of making up a story that she was Whitney Houston's godmother, even though the alleged offense happened five years ago at Houston's funeral.

Aretha was left fuming as she was not Whitney's godmother, but she declined to comment on the false claim at the time in a bid to avoid adding to the drama surrounding the I Will Always Love You hitmaker's tragic death. At Houston's funeral, Warwick told funeral-goers that Franklin was present and introduced her, but then realized she wasnt in attendance.

As AP notes, Franklin missed Houston's funeral because she was suffering from swollen feet, and was booked to play Radio City Music Hall later that night. "She is her godmother".

"I don't care about her apology, at this point it isn't about an apology, it's about libel", Franklin said. On Monday that all changed: After she had a sour interaction with Warwick at a Tribeca Film Festival event, she sent a fax to the Associated Press to set the record straight.

Franklin, however, was not able attend the service due to health issues; which Warwick respectively made the crowd aware of, while still giving the "Queen of Soul" a proper shout-out. "I didn't want to add anything to that and I didn't want to be a part of that", she said. "She loves Whitney as if she were born to her".

Warwick, 76, and Franklin, 75, came face to face during a screening for a Clive Davis documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival last week.

In the days after the funeral, Cissy Houston reportedly clarified that it was in fact Darlene Love, and not Franklin, who was Whitney's godmother, but Franklin felt the damage to her reputation had already been done. "You couldn't be serious, '" Franklin recalled.

"She will not dignify a response to the statement made by Aretha Franklin".

"At this point it isn't about an apology, it's about libel", she said.

She continues, "We've never been friends and I don't think that Dionne has ever liked me".

"'Ree's not here, but she is here", Warwick said, referring to Franklin by a nickname. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
