According to a statement Tuesday from Bush's office, he "was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Friday due to a persistent cough that prevented him from getting proper rest", and doctors treated him for pneumonia, which "has been resolved".

A spokesman for former President George H.W. Bush said the 92-year-old will remain under observation at a Houston hospital Wednesday after he was admitted last week with a mild case of pneumonia.

"He is already well on the path to recovery and going home", McGrath said. Bush, 91, had an overlapping stay at the same hospital for treatment of bronchitis. He added the former president is "in very good spirits". He was on a ventilator and in ICU but rallied, and had been doing fine.

Bush had to be hospitalized in January for "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia".

In March, the Bush's were honored for their service to others by the Mensch International Foundation.

Earlier this month, "41" was visited by former President Bill Clinton, who gave him a pair of colorful socks.

Bush suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease and must use a wheelchair or scooter for mobility.

He served as president from 1989 to 1993. The Bush's celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on January 6.
