Redknapp, with his 34 years of managerial experience, has subsequently been chosen to rescue them from potential relegation, with Birmingham set to face Midlands rivals Aston Villa this weekend.

New Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp has revealed he has not signed any official contract with the club, and that it was not a move motivated by money.

Gianfranco Zola took full responsibility for failing as Birmingham manager after resigning from his role following Monday's 2-0 home loss to Burton.

Speaking at his opening press conference, Redknapp admitted that taking over at the club would be a tough job.

"I've got to install some confidence in the players".

Brighton's first-ever promotion to the Premier League was guaranteed after Huddersfield drew 1-1 at Derby on Monday evening and now boss Chris Hughton wants the title.

"Birmingham are a team I've not see much of, seen nothing of really, they've not been on TV much this year". I thought the back three - John Brayford, Ben Turner and Kyle McFadden - were outstanding.

Redknapp has said he will initially take charge until the end of the season.

"I've gone in there, said I will come and do it".

"Funny really, because I was a bit anxious about that because I didn't know any of the players - a bit like here really".

"I know people criticise the owners but having met the people, they have got big plans and next year will be a big year for the club, we just have to stay in the division this year". I went over, met them at 9.30 p.m. and by 9.45 p.m.

The club had promised to act swiftly following the departure of Zola, who oversaw a dismal 22-game reign which brought only two wins. "That has to improve".

Birmingham had been in playoff contention when Zola arrived in December as a replacement for the controversially sacked Gary Rowett.

"It's a real challenge, " said Redknapp.
