Cuomo borrowed Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1932 Packard from a museum and successfully piloted it across.

Once that section is complete, the bridge unveiled today will serve Queens-bound traffic, and the other section will serve Brooklyn-bound commuters.

Queens-born Cuomo recalled riding over the Kosciuszko Bridge as a child as a constant source of frustration for his family.

The opening of the first span of the new Kosciuszko Bridge is just a few hours away.

The first span replacing the Kosciuszko Bridge will be open to traffic Thursday night.

Traffic on the new span is expected to start flowing at 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The new bridge is a welcome relief for the almost 200,000 commuters who use the bridge every day.

The last major bridge to open in New York City was the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island, in 1964.

Cuomo hopes the light displays will become a tourist attraction. A demolition is planned for the old bridge sometime this summer, which will be as awesome as a Led Zeppelin laser light show, especially if this happens.

In preparation for the traffic switch, motorists should expect lane closures in both directions on the BQE for the movement of concrete barriers to allow for traffic to be safely shifted onto the new bridge.

"If you want to continue to grow, if you want to continue to lead, then you have to continue to build", said Cuomo.

Cuomo was introduced at the ceremony by Polish Consul General Maciej Golubiewsk, who hailed the structure as a symbol of New York's diversity and the close ties between Americans and the Polish community.
