FBI Director: No Regrets but 'Mildly Nauseous' Over Election and Hillary Clinton

"I said to her, 'I hope someday you'll understand why I think I have to do this, '" Comey said. "I think other things did as well", she continued.

Why would concealing Clinton probe be "death of FBI" according to Comey, but concealing probe into Trump and a hostile foreign government is not?

The FBI obtained a warrant to search the laptop and sifted through thousands of emails, Comey said, including ones that had been forwarded to Weiner's laptop and that contained classified information.

Democratic senator Sheldon Whitehouse told Mr Comey that he did "not doubt [his] honesty "for a minute", but that he does think there were significant mistakes made in the handling of the email case. You don't get to pick the day the election's on".

"There's nothing there, no case there".

The announcement, which came to be known as the October Surprise, revealed no new findings.

Again acknowledging the ongoing investigation, today he said: "We're not going to say another peep about it until we're done".

But that didn't satisfy Sen.

The committee's top Democrat, Sen.

WikiLeaks past year published emails from Democratic email accounts that US intelligence officials believe were hacked by Russian Federation.

A spokesman for President Bill Clinton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The FBI began a counterintelligence investigation last July into whether Russian Federation had coordinated with Trump campaign associates to influence the American election, but he did not disclose that until a hearing in March, after Trump had been elected and taken office. And he said the FBI does not expect to have anything to say about the Russian Federation investigation until that one was over.

"It was a high interest matter [as was] the need to reassure the public ... I can't imagine how an unprecedented, big and bold hacking interference in the election did not also present exceptional circumstances", she said. But he said responsible journalists with sensitive information will approach the Federal Bureau of Investigation before publication to make sure that the news won't put people's lives in danger.

Comey refused to reveal any more details about the other major investigation from the 2016 election: Trump campaign aides colluding with Russian officials.

He declined Wednesday to discuss that investigation or to say which Americans the FBI was looking at. Lindsay Graham, R-SC, when the congressman asked if he believed WikiLeaks was a danger to national security.

"To my mind it crosses a line when it moves from being about trying to educate a public and instead just becomes about intelligence porn, frankly", Comey said. And many Clinton supporters continue to blame him personally for her loss.

"I was the candidate", she said. He later added, "I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I wouldn't have changed anything".

David Axelrod wasn't thrilled with Hillary Clinton's reasoning as to why she lost the election, telling CNN that "it takes a lot of work to lose to Donald Trump".
