France's Macron tells Trump he will defend climate deal

Many nations and NGOs are urging Trump to stay in the global agreement.

In arguing against a full withdrawal, the first daughter, who serves as a White House adviser, is joined by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has warned of diminished U.S. diplomatic standing as a result of pulling out of Paris; Energy Secretary Rick Perry, who advised the USA "renegotiate" its commitments; and major U.S. fossil fuel firms, who say the deal provides an effective framework for addressing climate change. It could roll back several Obama-era climate policies, including a review the Clean Power Plan initiative, which is created to curb man-made carbon emissions.

"It's critical for the United States to be in the Paris agreement", Sebi Medina-Tayac, an organizer of Tuesday's rally, told ThinkProgress. "We see a situation where we have one highly unstable person who is in charge of the fate of millions, if not billions, of people".

"But then we asked ourselves: Are we really asking the the president's daughter for mercy?" Instead, Medina-Tayac and his fellow activists opted to take their message to the Trump hotel.

"There's no question that if the U.S. withdraws it is going to create difficulties.in the negotiations", Paula Caballero of the World Resources Institute think tank said as climate envoys met for their first session since Trump's arrival in the White House.

While many commented on the post to applaud Tiffany for speaking out on the issue, others were unhappy that the company was taking what they saw as an anti-Trump stance. Additionally, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson articulated his support for the deal in his Senate confirmation hearing in January and reaffirmed that climate change posed real threats.

A new survey by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication found almost 70 per cent of people in the USA support remaining a signatory of the Paris Agreement.

Over the weekend, the EPA administrator released a letter stating that under federal ethics standards he is obligated to recuse himself from legal cases he was involved with in his old job.

"It's obvious this administration is in chaos".

"Again, it was not a very deep conversation", Haim said.

For many top members of the administration, the debate over whether to stay in Paris or withdraw has moved beyond simple climate science or diplomatic calculus and into a larger dispute over how the Trump administration plans to position itself at the global negotiating table moving forward. "My burial grounds are constantly threatened with pollution and with erosion and water level rise, all things associated with climate change".

The Investor Group on Climate Change was founded on the notion that climate change has and will have positive and negative impacts on investments in the future and to help companies understand the effect climate change may have on their business.

Macron won a landslide victory against nationalist Marine Le Pen in Sunday's election, and promised to reform the country's labor laws and double-down on promises to fight global warming.

"Global investors are eager to open their wallets to a low-carbon future, but it won't happen without clear, stable policy signals from countries worldwide - in particular, the United States government whose waffling on the Paris Climate Agreement is hugely troubling", said Mindy Lubber, head of the sustainability non-profit organsiation Ceres.
