'Even that is possible, ' Trump said. It may have also upset Mr Trump that Mr Comey testified in Congress that there was no evidence to Mr Trump's wild claim that President Obama had Trump Tower wiretapped during the 2016 election.

At least six contenders were expected to interview on Saturday: Sen. Fisher, who if nominated and confirmed would be the first woman to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation, now works for a private law firm in Washington, D.C. Garcia, a George W. Bush-nominated former U.S. attorney for New York's Southern District and a Governor Cuomo-nominated associate judge on the New York State Court of Appeals, also has experience in the upper ranks of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A group of current and former FBI officials endorsed Rogers on Saturday, noting his career as an FBI Special Agent and his tenure in Congress.

Jeff Sessions, the United States attorney general, began interviewing candidates to for the role on Saturday, with the White House hoping to move on from the decision which plunged his the Trump administration into a week-long crisis. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Comey has not confirmed Trump's account.

Lee arrived at the Justice Department just before 1 p.m. Earlier in the week, DOJ officials said they were close to naming an interim director, but have yet to do so.

Just before 2 p.m., two black SUVs drove through security and into the Justice Department courtyard. An official said McCabe was aboard one of them. He was the third interviewee of the day. Trump, then the Republican Presidential Nominee, reacted favourably to the news. "I thought that this would be a very popular thing, that I did, when I terminated Comey, because all of the Democrats couldn't stand him", Trump said.

The White House's reasoning seemed to shift as well. It was Trump's first public event outside the White House since Comey's ouster.

"That is not accurate", McCabe said.

The first candidate has already been interviewed.

The president said he never pressured Comey into dropping the FBI investigation, and added that there was no "collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians".

Spicer said that the White House communications team does the best they can to "get to you the most accurate and up-to-date information". "If we want to talk about contradicting statements and people who were maybe in the dark, how about the Democrats?"
