A San Antonio firefighter has died and two others are seriously hurt after a fire swept through a local shopping mall - near Ingram Park Mall - where parts of the building collapsed and forced crews to retreat. Three other firefighter were injured.

However, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said both are expected to be alright.

But when conditions suddenly changed, Chief Hood says they evacuated the building.

Firefighters were called to a strip mall for a blaze that erupted at about 9 p.m. More than 60 fire crews responded.

Hood said Scott Deem, a six-year veteran of the San Antonio Fire Department, was killed in the line of duty.

Before the fire, Matthew Christian Coronado, 25, massage therapy instructor at Milan Institute, said smoke began billowing in the front of the business, which is several stores away from where the fire started.

Hood says the firefighters who were on scene were taken to a crisis intervention team. He said they don't ever want to leave a firefighter behind, but they would have lost 15 or 20 more firefighters had they stayed inside.

A procession was held after Deem's body was placed in an ambulance to be taken to the medical examiner's office. "But we're gonna continue to do the good job we always do".

"I would like to ask the citizens of San Antonio for their prayers tonight, because we're hurting", Hood said as he fought back tears.
