"I hope you can let this go", the U.S. president was quoted as telling Comey in the report.

Among those interactions was a dinner in which Trump reportedly asked Comey to pledge his loyalty and a meeting in which Trump asked Comey to shut down an investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

"As President I wanted to share with Russian Federation... which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline safety", he defensively said in two postings on his Tweet account.

"It was a full flip-flop, going from absolutely "false" to "either confirming or declining to challenge almost every key aspect of the account", the Washington Post said".

He was responding to mounting criticism over the surprise sacking of former FBI chief James Comey, who was dispatched from his role at the bureau as it conducts an investigation into Russian involvement in last November's vote. "I hope you can let this go".

Earlier this week there were several news reports that Trump made the request regarding Flynn during a February meeting in the Oval Office - these accounts were based on a memo Comey drafted at the time, the contents of which were described by officials familiar with the memo. Trump himself had already contradicted that explanation, telling interviewers earlier that he had already made a decision to dismiss Comey.

The president's frustration has been building since he abruptly fired Comey.

Donald Trump embarks on his first trip overseas as president today amid growing controversy at home over his firing of former FBI Director James B. Comey and the special counsel probe of Russian interference and potential connections to Trump aides. Flynn is under investigation for his contacts with Russian Federation as well as his work on behalf of Turkey's government while he was a prominent campaign supporter of Trump.

Trump is reported to have called Comey to ask when the FBI would state that Trump wasn't personally under investigation, prompting Comey to ask Trump to not speak directly with him on the subject but send his inquiry through the proper channels.

The Times doesn't mince words about what's at stake here.

If US President Donald Trump was hoping to head out on his first big foreign trip with turmoil calmed at home, he's going to have a disappointing Air Force One departure on Friday.

There are at present five investigative committees in Congress that are digging into every aspect of this "Russia thing", preparing to hold public and closed door hearings, and issue subpoenas.

"Then he had the very poor performance on Wednesday". "I have my subpoena pen ready".

Trump lashed out in the morning on Twitter at the news that the Justice Department appointed a special prosecutor, former FBI director Robert Mueller, to oversee the investigation, calling the move a politically motivated "witch hunt" by his Democratic rivals.

It was a stern reminder that Mueller is backed by the nation's highest law enforcement authority in his mission to uncover the truth, no matter where or to whom it may lead.
