The Dodgers got to Johnny Cueto early, as Yasmani Grandal doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the first inning with two strikes and two outs.
Kershaw began the day 19-9 with a 1.66 earned run average - 1.36 at AT&T - in 38 outings against the Giants.
Cole (2-4) struck out three, walked two and received an overdue dose of support when Josh Bell smacked a three-run home run in the sixth off Jacob Turner (2-2).
The rematch was a mismatch.
OUR PREDICTION: The Giants are 5-2 in Cueto's last seven starts against the Dodgers, who are just 6-20 in their last 26 games in San Francisco and 1-4 in their last five games against the Giants overall.
In joining Houston's Dallas Keuchel as the majors' only seven-game winners, Kershaw (7-2) allowed singles to Justin Ruggiano, Buster Posey and pinch-hitter Nick Hundley in his seven innings. Machado struck out to end it when first base umpire C.B. Bucknor ruled he swung at the final pitch.
For Johnny Cueto, it was his first loss at home since August 30, 2016, against the Diamondbacks. Yasiel Puig hit a two-run single in the 6th, and rookie Cody Bellinger doubled in Corey Seager in the 7th to finish the Dodgers scoring.
The Milwaukee Brewers downed the San Diego Padres 3-1, the Seattle Mariners shut out the Oakland Athletics 4-0 and the Los Angeles Angels were too good for the Chicago White Sox 12-8. 2B Joe Panik was not in the starting lineup.
Cueto threw an up and in pitch at Grandal in the third inning, perhaps in response to the potentially alleged sign stealing. When Grandal flew out to end the inning, Grandal continued to shout at Cueto as he went up the line. Cueto and Grandal exchanged glares and both dugouts emptied onto the infield.
Things got heated in the late innings after Kevin Pillar apparently thought Atlanta reliever Jason Motte quick-pitched him, yelling toward the mound before Suzuki stepped in to calm things.
Cueto settled down and retired the Dodgers in order the next two innings before trouble erupted in the sixth.
Keon Broxton singled to load the bases, and Santana scored on Orlando Arcia's groundout.
The two spoke during Cueto's first at-bat, and all was fine.
"He was right on today", manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's our closer, why wouldn't we want to go ahead and activate him?".
"Good win", said Kershaw to reporters after the game.
To make room on the roster for Melancon, the Giants optioned infielder Kelby Tomlinson to Triple-A Sacramento.
A sweep only helps a slowly rebounding Giants team's confidence. Bonds will join 48 other former Giants players recognized on the brick wall of AT&T Park along King Street. "He read it well, made a ideal throw and helped us win a ballgame". "I feel like we need to win every time, but I guess when it's all said and done it definitely feels good to win and after three (losses) in a row maybe it feels a little bit better for sure".
Aaron Hill (right forearm strain) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a rehab assignment Tuesday night with the Class A San Jose Giants at Visalia.
