"This was the chief investigator for the FBI, overseeing a investigation into the president's campaign, and if Jeff Sessions was honest in recusing himself, he wouldn't have sent a letter to the President recommending Director Comey's firing", Swalwell concluded.

"They've been vetted over their lifetime, essentially, but very well-known, high-respected, really talented people", Trump said.

Mr. Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he may select Comey's successor before leaving for his first foreign trip next week. Spicer was responding to questions on a tweet by Trump early in the morning.

"President Trump and the White House have presented an ever-changing narrative on the rationale for the firing of FBI Director Comey", Feinstein said in a statement.

The dismissal came as Comey was heading an investigation into alleged coordination between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, a claim dismissed by both the president and Moscow. James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, said the Founding Fathers created three co-equal branches of government with checks and balances, but with Trump as president, that was now "eroding".

Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn, who is the current Senate majority whip and a former Texas attorney general, is also in the running.

Lindsey Graham has some advice for President Donald Trump: Stop tweeting about the Russian Federation investigation.

The first candidate to arrive was Alice Fisher, a high-ranking US Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration.

Lawmakers from both parties reprimanded Trump's actions last week, which included shifting explanations from the White House for Comey's dismissal and an ominous tweet by Trump that warned Comey against leaks to the press because he may have "tapes" of their conversations.

Trump's latest tweet alluding to the possibility of recordings further added to the heightened drama of the past two days as the White House tries to do damage control on the messaging surrounding Comey's firing. In Congressional Testimony, Comey disclosed the Federal Bureau of Investigation had been investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

The other possibilities involve there being no tapes, because Donald Trump is making it all up, or the third possibility is that someday Trump will release self-incriminating tapes and proclaim that they prove his innocence.
