While Ailes may polarize opinion, there's one thing that most people can agree on: he made a difference.

Shepard Smith, Brit Hume, Sean Hannity, Martha MacCollum, Tucker Carlson and Kimberly Guilfoyle were some of those who took a moment out of their time on air to pay their gushing respects to the man who was repeatedly accused of making their colleagues lives a living hell.

"I think it absolutely will push them closer to settlement, both because it will be legally virtually impossible to defend against these allegations, but it also gives them a little bit of a narrative about why they'd be settling now", she said.

CLEVELAND Longtime Fox News CEO Roger Ailes built his fame and fortune in TV and politics in the power corridors of NY and Washington, but classmates who knew him growing up in OH say he was down-to-earth and never forgot his Midwestern roots.

Seems like it was a fun day at the office for all. Also about the ways in which Ailes used Fox News' budget to fund his private investigators and smear campaigns and potentially illegal surveillance of journalists.

To be clear, there is no evidence that Ailes died from not being liked.

"Deeply saddened by death of Roger Ailes".

Television personality Piers Morgan described Ailes as "flawed", and conservative author Lee Edwards called the late media mogul a "victim of his own hubris".

"I think Fox will be unrecognizable in five to seven years", he said.

"When Roger supported Eisenhower it was like, 'oh my god, a Republican, are you kidding me?'" said Papalas, a retired police officer. Ailes was perhaps brilliant, but he was also perhaps broken.

Ailes was, per more than a dozen women who've come forward, a serial sexual harasser and enabler of it in his company.

American news organizations have always been opinionated, but they have traditionally separated opinion content from straight news reporting (in the case of newspapers, keeping the opinion on separate pages). Kelly left for NBC News and Van Susteren now has a daily show on MSNBC.

This has earned Fox News a remarkably loyal audience, along with some criticism that it wasn't fulfilling news organizations' traditional responsibility to inform and educate.

Bartlett wrote that Fox "reinforces marginally held views until they become doctrinaire and imposes false views on those exposed to no other viewpoint". Ailes was the media consultant for Bush Sr.'s vicious 1988 campaign that linked Democratic candidate Mike Dukakis to black rapist Willie Horton. He didn't discuss the news so much as ridicule the reporting of others. Newsmax expects to increase its television reach from 10 million to 35 million homes this summer. Many of his friends don't even bother paying for cable, said Chandler Thornton, a recent American University graduate who works for the College Republican National Committee. But that is a demographic that is both more likely to vote and more influential in political activity than the viewers of other networks.

"Fox has really established itself as the dominating force in cable news", he said.

Sherman: I see a network casting about for an identity.

"RIP #RogerAiles one of the most impt broadcasters in history-The genius who created #FoxNews - a good friend, who loved his family & country", - Geraldo Rivera.
