'Mama Mia' sequel announced, original cast returning

Universal Pictures has dated the film, titled "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!", for July 20 next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Universal just announced that they are moving forward with Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

The film was released in 2008, breaking box office records.

Actress Amanda Seyfried, director Phyllidia Lloyd, actress Meryl Streep, actor Pierce Brosnan, actress Christine Branski and actor Dominic Cooper at their Mamma Mia! premiere.

No official word on a story line for the sequel but upcoming film will reportedly include hits from ABBA and Euro-pop OGs Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are reportedly going to provide music and lyrics, as well as serve as executive producers.

Much of the original movie's cast, which included Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, are expected to return to sing more ABBA songs. The follow-up flick will be written and directed by Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), and is slated for release on July 20, 2018.

The sequel will also reportedly be shot at the Greek island of Skopelos, where the original was filmed.

The musical about a bride-to-be searching for her real father told to the hit songs of the '70s music group ABBA debuted on Broadway in 2001 and ran for nearly 14 years. Check back for casting updates as they become available.
