And despite reaching the final of the EFL Cup, many have suggested that it has been a disappointing first season for Puel, who signed a three-year contract last summer.
Saints take on Manchester United at St Mary's this evening looking to finish the season on a high, but it remains to be seen if Puel will be in charge for the next campaign.
His season-long performance will be reviewed by executive director Les Reed next week. "My work and my wish, is just to stay concentrated about this last game and finish well".
"We made seven changes and with a good result and good play and we saw all the squad play with good concentration and focus and this is the most important thing".
"I can not be distracted about the speculation", Puel said.
The Frenchman has grown unpopular with the fans due to his negative and defensive approach - their 0-0 draw with Man United on Wednesday was the fourth consecutive home game in which they have failed to score.
Rightly or wrongly, Puel is deeply among Saints fans and now both the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror are reporting he is expected to be a goner once the season has wrapped up thanks to deteriorating relationships with the club's players. "I think all of that should be properly debriefed, analysed next week and then we need to move with whatever is best for the club at that point".
Puel said: "The last result away against Middlesbrough allowed us the possibility to finish strong in the Premier League". After that, I can not make comments about speculation.
"When I spoke with our opponents' players and staff, they give congratulations about our players and our quality and all of this is a good response to the speculation".
