Trump told Russians that firing 'nut job' Comey eased pressure from investigation

The Times cited a document summarizing the meeting which it said was provided by a government official.

In the letter Trump sent to Comey last week informing him that he had been fired, Trump told Comey: "I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation".

"On May 8, I learned that President Trump meant to remove Director Comey and sought my advice and input", Rosenstein said.

"The President has always emphasized the importance of making deals with Russian Federation as it relates to Syria, Ukraine, defeating ISIS and other key issues for the benefit and safety of the American people", said White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer in a statement.

A current White House official is "under scrutiny" in the federal investigation into whether Trump campaign associates colluded with Russian Federation to interfere in the USA election, the Washington Post reported Friday.

The Post reports that the law enforcement inquiry is ramping up in intensity as investigators emerge from behind-the-scenes work to interviewing witnesses and issuing subpoenas.

The announcement, the latest in the shock-a-day Washington saga, was made by deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The president's plane had barely taken off for his first foreign trip when multiple political storms slammed into it Friday: One report in the New York Times, one in the Washington Post, another on CNN, and a press release from James Comey pointed at severe turbulence ahead for Donald Trump. And that the reason behind Comey's dismissal was how irritated Trump had become over ... the Russian Federation investigation. Rosenstein said he had "discussed the need for new leadership at the FBI" with then-senator Sessions last winter.

In a statement, he said that Mr. Comey had put unnecessary pressure on the president's ability to conduct diplomacy with Russian Federation on matters such as Syria, Ukraine and the Islamic State.

Trump's May 9 decision of fire Comey has set off a series of events and fueled speculation surrounding the Russian Federation investigation.

That came a day after it was reported Trump had divulged classified information to Russia's foreign minister, fanning further allegations about his own ties to the country's leaders.

At the time, the White House distributed the memo written by Rosenstein, which was dated May 9.

Rosenstein made it abundantly clear to the lawmakers that he drafted his memo only after Trump told him of his plans to dismiss the Federal Bureau of Investigation director. But the decision surprised many since it was Comey himself leading the investigation of Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

There is also the case of special counsel Mueller - Trump has called his appointment a "witch-hunt", and repeated it on Thursday.

Massachusetts Democratic congressman Seth Moulton says Rosenstein didn't "do a lot to bolster our confidence in him".

Trump spoke on Thursday at the White House as the Justice Department official who appointed a special counsel to independently lead a Trump-Russia investigation briefed the entire Senate in private at the Capitol.
