The London Fire Brigade tweeted that the fire involved the second to the top floor of the 27-story building.

She added that "unknown numbers" of people are still believed to be inside the high-rise.

Fire and police officials have not specified what went wrong, but extensive video footage shows the flames climbing the exterior of the building at a remarkable pace.

Piles of shoes, clothes, duvets and other items accumulated in several spots where volunteers were sorting them.

The London Fire Brigade was at the scene working to determine the cause of the fire and looking for people who are missing.

In addition to those killed, ambulance crews took 74 people to hospitals after the fire.

Residents warned that the tower block was a risk.

Ms Lamrani said she believed the child survived unharmed. Some residents said no alarm had sounded. "I just hope they have got everyone out", he said.

'[However] fire and people safety are absolutely critical in all buildings, which is why there must be an urgent public inquiry to fully understand how this tragedy occurred'. The church is also serving lunch and dinner to survivors.

"The fire staff I work with are incredibly passionate about their job".

Farah Hamdan, her husband Omar Belkadi and their six-month-old daughter are still unaccounted for, according to Farah's father, Rkia. Speaking within weeks of London's deadliest attack by militants in more than a decade, Mr Cundy said nothing suggested the fire was linked to terrorism.
