City have spent more than £200m on players this summer, but Guardiola says the current squad are "young and will stay for the future".
Pep Guardiola will have been disappointed with his first season in England as it was his first season without a piece of silverware for the first time in his managerial career, and the Catalan has looked to rectify by breaking the bank with the likes of Bernardo Silva, Ederson, Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy joining the cause thus far. His composure and ball-playing was supposed to stabilise the heart of the defence, but his inability to catch up with the high expectations after his heavy transfer fee cost both Manchester City and the player himself for that matter.
Lookman scored on his debut against Manchester City with a cool finish that belied his tender age and Everton manager Ronald Koeman believes the Londoner can make a difference for his team this year. It's completely the same, because it's the same manager. They've already made three (Walker, Mendy and Danilo) which may be sufficient at the moment. Jesus ended last season with seven goals in eight Premier League starts, although arguably his two most famous strikes were disallowed for offside. But expect Sergio Aguero to make things interesting - if he plays regularly.
"We needed to do that because it was one of the oldest teams in Europe not just the Premier League and we need to change it. We were not able with those players to find a solution".
Guardiola said: "It is not just us".
The Amex Stadium will be the 56th different ground to host a Premier League fixture.
"The next year I had some offers from abroad and took the step towards Manchester City and had another great year". "For example, hopefully next season I will be here and we are not going to spend how we spent this season". Ederson can get the ball into the opposition penalty box with one long pass, something Guardiola highlighted following the preseason win against Tottenham in Nashville.
So how will Guardiola approach this new test of his credentials?
Brighton lost out in the play-offs in 2016 but they bounced back last year as Chris Hughton's side clinched promotion by mid April. "I was confident last season too". It's the same with the midfielders, except maybe the holding midfielders.
Brighton have broken their club transfer record twice in one week to draft in Davy Propper from PSV Eindhoven and Club Brugge's Jose Izquierdo, subject to medical and international clearance. The teams that arrive, in the first four, five, six games they are so complicated. They must also have pace and athleticism.
"Last season we were [favourites] too and we finished 15 points behind", he told a news conference.
Chelsea have their fair share of troubles, but have a bloody-mindedness about them that should get them to a distant second place while Arsenal may have bought their saviour in Alexandre Lacazette.
