He unleashed a left-footed thunderbolt to help Madrid beat Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup last month and the Spain international claims his club manager has likened him to their bitter rivals' biggest star.

Zinedine Zidane has accepted that he is short on numbers in attack because Real Madrid failed to replace Alvaro Morata after he made clear his desire to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

"It's true that when you look at the players that we had, like Morata and Mariano, when you look now and you have only have Mayoral you could think we lack a number nine and that might be the case".

Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with the 21-year-old, while Paris Saint-Germain are admirers of him too. I don't want to go around in circles.

Zidane was speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions League opener at home to APOEL Nicosia which comes five days after his side drew 1-1 at home to Levante.

The 2017-18 La Liga season has begun with some familiar elements thus far, such as the incredible skill of Lionel Messi and the fantastic defensive work-rate of Athletic Bilbao. "We will get by with the players we have and they will do a good job", commented the Madrid coach.

"It seemed strange to us that Neymar left Barcelona". He will play tomorrow but we'll be without him again on Sunday.

"We're not pleased with these results [so far], but this is football". Cristiano does more than score goals. "I would have liked Morata to stay, but you have to understand that he wanted to leave to play more and we respect that". Mentally he's fine, physically he's fine.
