The San Antonio Stars are on the verge of moving to Las Vegas. They say that the buyer has plans to move the team to Las Vegas.

"On behalf of Spurs Sports & Entertainment ownership, management, and staff, we are all very thankful to the wonderful Stars fans, season ticket members and corporate partners who have supported the team over the last 15 years", the statement read in part.

"The reason why the Spurs made that business decision is because within their organization and within San Antonio was not making an impact, so they made a decision in the best interest of the community", Nirenberg said.

Earlier this year, Spurs Sports and Entertainment submitted an application for expansion by Major League Soccer.

San Antonio finished the 2017 season with the league's worst record at 8-26, marking the third consecutive season the Stars have posted the worst mark in the league.

If this deal and relocation is approved by the Board of Governors, it would make the Stars the second professional team in the growing Vegas area.

The Stars, one of the WNBA's original eight franchises, moved to San Antonio in 2002 after spending their first six seasons playing in Salt Lake City as the Utah Starzz.

The NBA may eventually put a team in Las Vegas, as the stigma attached to having teams and pro athletes call the gambling capital of the world home is slowly being removed.

San Antonio was 16-18 that year; the Stars' last winning record came in 2012, when they were 21-13. Meanwhile, the Raiders are set to relocate from Oakland in 2020.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN's Mechelle Voepel was used in this report.
