Verstappen started with Red Bull's young driver program when he was 16.

But with his current deal set to expire at the end of 2018, Italian giants Ferrari were reported to be interested in bringing Verstappen to Maranello for 2019.

Max Verstappen celebrated his new contract extension with Red Bull Racing by posting the second fastest time of the day at the Circuit of the Americas as the United States Grand Prix weekend got underway on Friday.

Max Verstappen, the youngest winner in Formula One history and a driver most regard as a future champion, has agreed to stay with Red Bull through the 2020 season. I don't know exactly what will be changed and what won't be.

"We have had our ups and downs this year but I still feel really good in the team, you can see they have been working really hard to improve and today shows that we are again competitive".

However, after winning in Malaysia, he finished second in Japan too.

Team Principal Christian Horner also spoke of his delight that his driver has chosen to extend his spell with the Tillbrook-based F1 team.

"We had a phenomenal start together in Spain and Max has only pushed on from there". It was a great moment for the whole team to see him put the frustrations of this season behind him in taking that fantastic victory in Malaysia last month.

"He and his management see a lot of positives in the team to continue like that".

"He is pure racer, with an undeniable talent at the wheel and a rare instinct for what it takes to compete consistently at this level".
