City go into Sunday's derby with an extensive lead over United thanks to David Silva's 83rd-minute winner in the 2-1 victory over West Ham United.

Shakhtar's players celebrate after winning the UEFA Champions League group F football match between Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City, on December 6, 2017, at the Metalist stadium in Kharkiv, Eastern Ukraine.

City have been in irresistible form this season but it appears that teams may have identified a potential Achilles heel in their defence at set pieces.

Taison. In front of the Brazil manager, Taison ran the show, and City couldn't cope with his direct attacking play.

Bernard and Ismaily put Shakhtar in control after half an hour and they held on to their win despite Sergio Aguero's late penalty.

This isn't a dead rubber by any means but Man City will be wary of the busy time they'll surely have on Sunday against Man Utd and don't have as much to play for as Shakhtar.

City will already be without John Stones for their trip to Old Trafford, with the England international sidelined with a hamstring problem he hopes to return from in time for the Christmas period.

There's no doubt that the decorated striker has a point in his opinions, and looking through his perspective makes it clear why. Seven of City's next eight games are in the league, and the other is the chance to reach the Carabao Cup semi-final. They need one more win to equal Arsenal's record of 14 consecutive victories, and where better to match the Invincible's benchmark then at Old Trafford next Sunday.

"We came here to win but we could not".

And it was clear the Ukrainians had more riding on this game from the off. They played a good game but we did too.

However, according to Sky Italia the Catalan has sent an SMS message to Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, promising him that City will give their 'maximum effort' to beat Shakhtar and make it six wins out of six in Group F.

They kicked off the campaign with what was, to many, a shock defeat at Shakhtar, when they chose to leave Mertens and Jorginho on the bench.

"The truth is Eric Bailly no chance for the weekend, Phil Jones a chance, (Marouane) Fellaini a chance, Zlatan (Ibrahimovic) a big chance and (Nemanja) Matic is injured but will play for sure".

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, revealed after his sides 3-1 victory over Newcastle on Saturday that Eden Hazard is enjoying the extra freedom that his new central role allows him.
