An official of the ministry made the comment Friday in response to a reporter's question about when it will make an official proposal for military talks with the North. The official said the military talks are focused on necessary measures to ensure the success of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

He says Guterres also hopes that "other efforts" to reduce tensions - which he did not identify - "will contribute to the resumption of sincere dialogue leading to sustainable peace and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula".

At a later news conference with the visiting Norwegian prime minister, Trump said the United States had problems with North Korea, but "a lot of good talks are going on right now".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's future wife Ri Sol Ju was among the group who attended the 2005 Asian Athletics Championships in Incheon, South Korea.

The IOC said that its president Thomas Bach would host the talks, which would also include the delegations from the national Olympic committees of both countries.

North Korea is ranked 25th.

"If the North and South abandon external forces and cooperate together, we will be able to fully solve all problems to match our people's needs and our joint prosperity", it said. But they have never had a unified team in any sport at multi-sport competitions like the Olympics or the Asian Games.

Senior State Department official Steve Goldstein says the U.S.is encouraged North Korea is sending athletes and supporters to the Games.

China would not attend and was resolutely opposed to it, its foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said.
